As the weather warms up, it’s time to get your garden ready for the hot, dry months ahead. A few simple steps now can help your plants thrive and save precious water.

Smart Water Use
Water early or late: Water in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation.
Deep, less frequent watering: Encourage deep root growth by watering thoroughly but less often.
Drip irrigation or soaker hoses: These deliver water directly to plant roots and waste less than sprinklers.
Collect rainwater: Use barrels or buckets to catch rain from your roof for later use.

Mulch to Conserve Moisture
Add a thick layer (5–8 cm) of mulch (straw, bark chips, compost, or leaves) around plants.
Mulch keeps soil cool, suppresses weeds, and locks in moisture.

Water for Birds & Bees
Place shallow dishes or birdbaths with stones or pebbles so bees and small creatures can safely drink.
Keep them topped up and in partial shade.
Change water regularly to prevent mosquitoes.

Plant Wisely
Group plants with similar water needs together.
Shade tender plants with taller ones or temporary shade cloths.
Plant out new seedlings in the cool of the morning or late afternoon to avoid transplant shock in the heat of the day

Extra Summer Prep
Weed regularly — weeds compete for water and nutrients.
Feed your soil with compost to improve water retention.
Check irrigation systems for leaks or clogs before the heat sets in.
Invest in/harvest bamboo stakes for holding up tomatoes and other plants
Stock up on plant ties
Renew potting soil in potted plants and feed
Slug and snail nightly raids are a good practice to save newly planted veggies and plants
Enjoy! Bring on the sunshine!! Summer is here!
