November marks the true beginning of the summer garden. With longer, sunnier days and warmer nights, the soil is buzzing with life and opportunity. It’s a month of growth, colour, and reward — the perfect time to plant, sow, and prepare for a bountiful summer.
🌱 Sowing in November
Whether you're sowing directly into the garden or starting in trays, now is the time to keep your crops coming. Regular sowing means regular harvesting through the warmer months.
🌿 Direct Sow:
Veggies: Beans, beetroot, carrots, capsicums, celery, lettuce, mesclun, parsnips, radish, rocket, silverbeet, spinach, sweetcorn, tomatoes
🌱 Tray Sow:
Herbs & greens: Basil, chives, coriander, dill, parsley, rocket, spring onions
Veggies: Courgettes, cucumbers, eggplants, beetroot, peppers (capsicum), chillies, Chinese cabbage, leeks, beans, melons, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes
Tip: Keep seed trays in a warm, bright spot and don’t let them dry out. Harden seedlings off before planting them into the garden.
🍅 Planting Out

The garden is wide open for summer crops!
Plant now: Tomatoes, chillies, courgettes, capsicums, sweetcorn
Salad staples: Keep planting lettuce, mesclun, radish, and spring onions every 2–3 weeks for a steady supply
Berries: It’s a great time to plant strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries, blackberries, and boysenberries for a long, sweet harvest
Flowers in the vege garden: Calendula, nasturtium, marigolds, and borage will attract pollinators, deter pests, and brighten your garden beds
🍓 Fruit & Tree Care
Plant passionfruit: These climbers need a sturdy support to sprawl over — a trellis or fence is perfect
Weed around fruit trees: Keeping bases clear helps prevent pests and diseases
Mulch well: A thick layer of mulch will lock in moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce watering needs
Feed regularly: A dose of compost, sheep pellets, or liquid fertiliser will keep trees thriving through summer
🧑🌾 Garden Chores
Tomato care: Stake tall varieties early, water deeply and consistently, and start feeding with liquid fertiliser. Plant basil nearby to enhance their flavour and help deter pests
Harvest & clear out: Pull the last of your winter veggies — broad beans, carrots, spinach — and use the space for summer plantings
Support your climbers: Beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes need strong structures early on to avoid damaging roots later

Check your crops: Regularly inspect for pests like aphids or whitefly, and deal with them early to avoid larger issues
Stay on top of watering: Especially for young seedlings and newly planted crops — mulch helps retain moisture and reduce evaporation
🌸 A Garden in Full Swing

November is an exciting time in the garden — every day brings new growth, blossoms, and the promise of fresh produce. Stay present, keep planting, and enjoy watching your garden spring to life.
